The video artwork "Intangible" by artist Carolina Ceca has been selected as a Semi-Finalist at the Braga International Video Dance Festival in Portugal, which will be held in April at gnration in Braga.
Since its premiere at the Embassy of Spain in Japan in June 2021, "Intangible" has been shown in twelve countries and selected for twelve festivals and competitions. Additionally, it has been projected in seven exhibitions, including five museums.
Carolina Ceca is an interdisciplinary artist originally from Spain.
Residing in Tokyo, Japan, for over fifteen years, she has developed a unique body of work distinguished by a profoundly personal aesthetic and an unwavering commitment to nature. Her practice interweaves art, intellectual inquiry, and creative experimentation. Alongside her artistic endeavours, she also engages in direction, writing, and research within the realm of art history.
She is a lifelong Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in England. Her academic journey includes postgraduate studies at the University of Salamanca in Spain and Ferris University in Japan. She has also been awarded artist residencies at the National Institute of Fine Arts in Tétouan, Morocco, and Casa Falconieri in Sardinia, Italy.
The artist has crossed borders and her works have been presented at institutions such as the Embassy of Spain in Tokyo, RSA House in London, Taman Ismail Marzuki in Indonesia, the Instituto Cervantes, the Museum of Photography – Antonio Pérez Foundation in Cuenca, and the Museum of Santa Cruz in Toledo in Spain, among others.
Since 2020, Ceca has embraced video art, experimenting with innovative visual narratives. Her works have been featured in over twenty international festivals, with a standout presentation at the Fine Arts Film Festival in California, USA. Her debut in this medium, Intangible, features a collaboration with the renowned Japanese butoh dance company Dairakudakan and has become a defining moment in her video art career. Since then, she has continued to collaborate with composer Marcos Fernández-Barrero, producing a series of works that creatively intertwine music and imagery.
Beyond her artistic practice, Ceca’s voice resonates in cultural and academic circles. She has contributed columns to the prestigious Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun through Art Exhibition Japan and to NHK Publishing, accompanied by her drawings. Her pedagogical contributions are equally notable, with lectures and seminars delivered at institutions such as the Japan Foundation in Casa Asia and the University of Tokyo.
